Unit: 1866; Private; Wisconsin 35th Regimental Infantry, Company K; entered service 13 October 1864 for three years, mustered out 15 March 1866 in Brownsville, Texas, his service being no longer required. Residence was identified as Waldwick.
Would have joined the 35th Wisconsin Infantry when the regiment was in Devall's Bluff, Arkansas. From there the regiment moved to Brownsville, Arkansas on 9 November to guard the Memphis & Little Rock Railroad and did so until 12 December. It then moved back to Devall's Bluff on December 12, with duty there until 7 February 1865; Algiers, Louisiana on 7 February, thence to Mobile Point, Alabama on February 22. The regiment then participated in the Campaign against Mobile and its defenses March 17-April 12. This included a siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely near Blakeley, Alabama March 26-April 8; assault on and capture of Fort Blakely April 9 and the occupation of Mobile, Alabama on April 12. Following this was a march to Mcintosh Bluff, Alabama April 13-26, with a moved back to Mobile on 9 May, and duty there until June 1. The regiment moved to Brazos Santiago, Texas, June 1-8, thence to Clarksville, Texas June 20, and to Brownsville, Texas on 2 August 1865. Duty at Brownsville until 15 March 1866 when the regiment was mustered out. Adam was discharged.

Officer Robert Backes was struck and killed by a vehicle while struggling with a man he was attempting to arrest for drunk driving. The suspect he was struggling with was also struck and killed.
Officer Backes had served with the agency for 12 years. He was survived by his wife, son, and two daughters.
Family Testimonial: 2010, By Robert was a military veteran and Germantown Police Officer Killed in the line of duty on 21 March 1981. Prior to joining the Department, he served with the United States Coast Guard.
