Family Testimonial: 2006, By self: Served 1943 - 1945; Was POW 26 months in Germany, Staglag III. I and another escaped. Gone 11 days. Lived in Woods. We tried to hop a train, shot in leg and recaptured and in solitary confinement for 5 months. Forced to work on railroad KDO. 3 Markescheide, Germany. In Stalag III at Luckenwalde. Under Russian troops control and then liberated by Americans, then back to states.
Government paid me $1.00 a day for the time I was a POW but deducted the 11 days as an escapee because Section 6 of the war claims act: does not provide payment of benefits during period of escapement. Still have my letter from the War Claims Commission. (our brochure we got when we joined the Army states, "Escape If You Can")
