Monte W. Oglesby

M, b. 28 November 1938, d. 15 July 2009
Monte W. Oglesby of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 70 years at the Cedar Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on 15 July 2009. Monte’s life can best be summed up in the following way: "Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming…Wow! What a ride!"

He was born in Longview, Cowlitz County, Washington to Everett and June Oglesby. Monte and his family moved to Garden Grove, Orange County, California in 1955. He was graduated from Garden Grove High School in 1957. Monte married Patricia Knepp on 07 March 1974 in Limestone, Aroostook County, Maine and they were best friends and companions for 35 years sharing adventures, companionship, and laughter. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1960 serving as an air policeman and was a member of the high-powered rifle team. Later in his military career, he was a small arms instructor. Monte was stationed around the world, including Texas, Japan, Turkey, Guam, New Hampshire and Alaska. He served two tours in Vietnam. His commendations included a Good Conduct Metal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Metal. Monte retired in 1981 from the Air Force and started his retirement continuing to live life to the fullest. Immediately after retiring, he and Patty staked a gold claim in the Trinity Mountains of California. He went on to school to get his CDL and did long-haul trucking. In 2006, Monte received his real estate license. He started his love for golf as a caddie in Longview. He learned the game from his uncles. Monte worked at several courses and most recently helped teach the junior golf program at West Bend Lakes. He studied technical aspects of the game and enjoyed helping others develop their skills. Monday league at Hon-E-Kor and Wednesday league at West Bend Lakes afforded Monte the opportunity to show his golfing prowess, share stories and entertain those around him. Monte enjoyed traveling and sharing stories of his travel-from days as a wrangler on a ranch in Wyoming, to visiting ghost towns in Nevada, sight seeing at the most haunted castle in Ireland, or walking the lava flows in Hawaii – it was always an adventure and an opportunity to meet new people and touch their lives.

Monte loved animals, both domestic and wild. He always had at least one cat on his lap during TV time. He was a bird watcher and animal observer and many of his travel adventures were to birding areas or to see elk bugling in Rocky Mountain National Park or grizzly bears in Glacier National Park. Monte appreciated the beauty of flowers and was an active member of the West Bend Beautification Committee. He was a great friend to many, a golfer, a mentor, a communicator and story teller. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, many family members, and friends he touched throughout the world.

He was survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Patricia. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sandra Joan Siltanen; mother-in-law, Mary Robinson Knepp, and longtime family friend, Charlie Schrader. A visitation took place Saturday, 18 July 2009 at the Phillip Funeral Home, 1420 West Paradise Drive in West Bend. A memorial service followed where Pastor Mike Moran officiated.
