Arthur J. Neuy Jr.

      Arthur J. Neuy Jr. of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 68 years on Saturday, 07 August 2010 at St. Joseph Hospital in the town of Polk. His nickname was Butch. Arthur was born on 07 February 1942 in West Bend to the late Arthur and Marion (Hunt) Neuy. In 1959, Art enlisted into the United State Marine Corps. Following his discharge in 1963, he returned to West Bend where he made his home. He was always working with his hands. Woodworking, welding, fixing and maintaining various kinds of equipment were all his hobbies, as well as his livelihood. He also was devoted to his family, and cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was survived by three children and four step-children. Arthur was preceded in death by a grandson, Bryan Missall; three sisters, Arlene Neuy, Dorothy (James) Rick and Linda (Pete) Dalton; three brothers, Richard Neuy Sr., Kenny (Joy) Neuy and Tommy Neuy; and a brother-in-law, Larry Herman. A memorial services was held on Thursday, 12 August at the Schmidt Funeral Home.

William G. Laabs

      William G. Laabs of Hales Corners, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, USA. formerly of Spring Hill, FLorida and West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin. Williamwas born to Eternal Life on Wednesday, 13 October 2010, at the age of 90 years. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothea, and his son. William graduated from Marquette University as an Electrical Engineer. He was a veteran of WWII. William worked at the West Bend Company until his retirement. He was an avid golfer and an active member of his church. William will be deeply missed by his family. Private Memorial and interment were held.

Lawrence Leo Whittle

      Lawrence Leo Whittle, also known as Larry, entered into Heaven at the age of 75 years on Monday, 25 October 2010, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Husband and best friend to his wife Colleen of 53 years, and loving father of six children. Preceded in death by his son Patrick Lawrence and daughter Teresa Whittle Monahan, parents John and Margaret Whittle and brother Patrick James. Lawrence was born on a farm in Arlington, Iowa, USA on 28 September 1935. He retired in 2002 as President of Milport Chemical Company after 47 years of service. Lawrence was a Unnited States Army veteran who served for two years in Germany. His many hobbies included flying, gardening, farming, cheering for the Packers and Brewers, golfing and most importantly spending cherished time with family and friends. Larry grew the most beautiful hollyhocks which were enjoyed by the neighborhood. He wasis a member of St. Francis Borgia Church, Cedarburg, Ozaukee County, Wisconsion Peter Wollner American Legion Post 288. Larry touched everyone with his kind heart, humor and wisdom. Visitation was on Friday, 29 October 2010 at St. Francis Borgia North Catholic Church (1375 Covered Bridge Road, Cedarburg) with Funeral Mass following. Private interment Resurrection Cemetery, Mequon.

Marvin C. Burg

      Marvin C. Burg, formerly of Colgate, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA passed away unexpectedly in his home at the age of 59 years on Monday, 25 October 2010. Marvin was born in Hartford on 26 March 26 to John and Lorraine (Neu) Burg, number 12 of 19 children. Marv was a beloved brother and leaves behind seventeen brothers and sisters: Robert (Louise) Burg, Janet (John) Chipman, Beatrice Gmeiner, Bernice (Larry) Cote’, Wayne Burg, William (Christine) Burg, James (Patricia) Burg, Gerald (Laurie) Burg, Michael (Mary) Burg, Mary (Randall) Fries, Raymond (Janice) Burg, Kenneth Burg, Kathleen Burg, Jean (Richard) Wagner, Jane Whetzel, Richard (Linda Renard) Burg and Karin Burg. He also leaves behind 41 nieces and nephews, 38 great-nieces and great-nephews, 1 great- great niece, cousins, and other extended relatives and friends. Marv was preceded in death by his father, John N. Burg in 1990 and his mother, Lorraine (Neu) Burg in 2006, and a brother, Donald Burg in 1964. He attended St. Boniface Catholic School and then obtained his GED. Immediately thereafter, Marv served in the Air Force primarily as a bus driver in Guam for four years after the Vietnam war, and returned to Wisconsin to begin his primary occupation as a carpenter. He was an extremely skilled woodworker and eventually began his own carpentry business from which he recently retired. He kept his hands busy refurbishing his farm house in St. Lawrence. Marv loved the outdoors, and his hobbies and interests included fishing, biking, gardening, and, in his younger years, sports of all kinds. A quiet, simple man of few words, Marv was beloved by his large family, for whom he was always available to assist with a building or carpentry job or project whenever he was needed. He will be sorely missed. Funeral services were held on Friday, 29 October 2010 at Peace United Church of Christ, 343 First Street, Kewaskum, where Pastor Eric Kirkegaard officiated. Visitation was at the church on Friday. Interment with military honors immediately following the funeral service will be at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Germantown.       A funeral service was held on Tuesday at Saints Peter and Paul Lutheran Church in Hancock, Houghton County, Michigan, USA. for former Grafton resident John W. Sutinen, age 73 years, who died on 28 July 2000 following a battle with cancer. Mr. Sutinen was born 14 April 1927 in Hancock. He was the son of Frank and Flora Sutinen. Mr. Sutinen married Beatrice Kuru on 24 February 1951. He served in the United States Navy during WWII. Mr. Sutinen worked as a former production manager for Kurz & Root Co. in Cedarburg, Ozaukee Country, Wisconsin and later was employed as a quality control inspector for Power Products. Survivors include his wife Beatrice of Houghton and four children. Further survived by 10 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 2 sisters, 2 brothers, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Gordon W. Knoke

      Gordon W. Knoke of Hartford, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA passed away at the age of 80 years on Wednesday, 26 July 2000 at his home. Gordon was born in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County on 05 November 1919 to F. William and Catherine (Lauer) Knoke. He graduated from Washington High School in Milwaukee in 1938. Gordon was married to Shirley Kraft for 38 years until her death in 1979. He then married Louise Buhrow-Reinemann in 1981 at Peace Lutheran Church in Hartford. Gordon served his country in the United States Air Force during WWII. He retired as regional manager of Transamerica Insurance Company. Gordon enjoyed woodworking, fishing, golfing, playing cards, ballroom dancing and being with his family. By the grace of God he believe that Jesus Christ was his Savior and on 21 December 1980, he was baptized into the Christian faith and accepted as a member of Peace Lutheran Church. He served his Lord in various capacities. Gordon was a past president of the Hartford Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a member of the Friestadt Pommerscher Verein. Gordon is survived by his wife and five children. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Shirley; and a granddaughter. Funeral Services were held on Sunday, 30 July at Peace Lutheran Church in Hartford where the Reverend Jon Tesch officiated. Family greeted relatives and friends on Sunday at the church. Inurnment was at Wisconsin Memorial Park, Brookfield, Waukesha County.

Daniel was born in Milwaukee on 06 January 1918 to William H. and Margaret Mary (Coakley) Masters. He married Dorothy Maichle on 06 July 1940 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Pewaukee. Daniel was a member of the Hartford Courtney-Carr-Milner American Legion Post 19, Hartford Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8834, St. Mary of the Hill, Holy Hill Parish and Hartford Senior Friends. He was survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy, and five children. Daniel was preceded in death by three children, Kathleen, Daniel and John; and two brothers, Herbert and John. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, 31 July at Holy Hill, Upper Church, where Father Cyril Guise officiated. Family greeted relatives and friends on Monday at the church. Interment was at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Milwaukee.

Kenneth J. Patnode

      Kenneth J. Patnode of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died the age of 71 years on Wednesday, 02 August 2000, at St. Joseph Community Hospital. Kenneth was born 15 December 1923 in White Lake, Langlade County to Peter and Lillian (Bien) Patnode. In 1940 his family moved to Milwaukee where he attended Milwaukee Boys Trade and Technical High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict. On 03 January 1953 Ken married Mary Ann Ashworth at St. Robert Catholic Church in Shorewood, Milwaukee County. At the time of Kens retirement in 1985, from the former Cleaver-Brooks, presently Aqua-Chem Inc., he was a plant foreman. His wife Mary Ann passed away 22 November 1987. He is survived by five children. Preceding him in death were two brothers and four sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, 05 August at St. Frances Cabrini Church, West Bend. Father Jeffrey Haines presided. Entombment was at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Milwaukee. Visitation was at the church only on Saturday.

      Services and inurnment were held on Saturday at Loveland Burial Park for James R. Loving of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, formerly of Grafton, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, USA who died at the age of 76 years on 30 May 2000. Reverend Priscilla Fussman officiated at the ceremony. Mr. Loving was born on 10 October 1923 in Curran, Illinois, son of James Russell Sr. and Marian Margaret (Allen) Loving. He married Elrine in Georgia in 1995. James served in the United States Army during WWII in Europe in the 26th Infantry Division of Patton’s 3rd Army.
Mr. Loving had been a conductor for the Milwaukee Railroad for 30 years and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was survived by his wife, Elrine, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico and their three sons. Further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife Sarah Loving.

Raymond E. Schuster

Raymond was born on 04 Augist 1916 in Fillmore to the late Henry and Minnie (Guelzow) Schuster. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, after which time he came to West Bend and worked as a brick mason and foreman with the former Winninghoff and Bradley Construction Company. Raymond was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in West Bend, the West Bend Fred A. Schaefer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1393 and the Hartford Lt. Adrian W. Frankow Disabled American Veterans Chapter 58. Raymond was survived by two children. He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Schuster. Graveside services with Father Jerry Repenshek were held on Sunday at Fillmore Union Cemetery in Fillmore.

Charles W. Poler

      Charles W. Poler of Lomira, Dodge County, Wisconsin, USA, formerly of West Bend, Washington County died at the age of 78 years on Thursday, 17 August 2000 at St. Joseph Community Hospital in West Bend. Charles was born on 21 May 1922 in Neillsville, Clark County to William and Madelene (Shilts) Poler. He was married to Lovella Ferguson on 12 June 1943. After serving in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II, the couple made their home in Green Bay, Brown County. In 1964 Charles and Lovella moved to West Bend and Chuck became the manager of the silk screening department at Serigraph Inc. After his retirement in 1983, Chuck and Lovella traveled the country visiting all 50 states, and in 1989, they settled down in Lomira. Charles was a member of the West Bend Moose Lodge #1398 and the Lomira Bintzler-Waechller American Legion Post 347. He is survived by his wife Lovella and seven children. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen Kapfer, Ethel Henne and Ardis Sherwood. A memorial service was held on Saturday, 19 August 2000 at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral Homein West Bend. Visitation was on Saturday. A reception followed the service at the funeral home. Inurnment took place in Grant Cemetery in Neillsville.

Edwin C. Kuenzel

      Edwin C. Kuenzel of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 76 years on Sunday, 20 August 2000 at St. Joseph Community Hospital. Edwin was born on 06 October1923 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County to the late Edwin C. and Erna L. (Reiser) Kuenzel. After graduating from Milwaukee's Rufus King High School, Edwin attended Michigan Tech where he earned his bachelor's degree in metallurgy. He then entered the United States Army, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Following his discharge, he returned to Milwaukee and became employed at the former Joseph T. Ryerson, a steel warehouse in Milwaukee. On 13 September 1947, he was united in marriage to Elaine L. Loeper at St. John Lutheran Church in Withee, Clark County. In 1986 they moved to Chula Vista, California, returning to Wisconsin and settling in West Bend in 1994. Edwin was a member of the Quarter Century Club at Joseph T. Ryerson and Pilgrim Lutheran Church in West Bend. He was survived by his wife 52 years, Elaine, and their four children. A Memorial services was held on Thursday, 24 August at Pilgrim Lutheran Church where the Reverends Clark M. Davis and Joseph Meyer co-officiated. The family greeted relatives and friends in the church hall following the services.

Mr. Garlie was born Sept. 19, 1955 in Milwaukee, son of Allan and Geraldine (nee Krieger) Garlie. He married Chris Owsley on Oct. 27, 1973 in Wisconsin.

He worked as a journeyman and foreman for Iron Workers Local #8 and also served as past vice president and as a member. Mr. Garlie also served in the Army.

Survivors include: parents Allan and Geraldine Garlie of Milwaukee; wife Chris Garlie of Cedarburg; sons Jason Garlie of Milwaukee, Nick (fiancee Jennifer Smith) of Cedarburg; brothers Tim (Mary) Garlie of Greenfield, Tom (Marilyn) Garlie of Oak Creek; sisters Linda Glazewski of Milwaukee, Christine (Dave) Dziegielewski of Milwaukee; brother-in-law Mike (Mary) Owsley of Menomonee Falls; sister-in-law Tami (Todd) Leren of Colgate.

Further survived by iron-working brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Jeffrey A. Valentine Mergenthaler

      Valentine "Whitey" Mergenthaler of Slinger, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 72 years on Friday, 25 August 2000 at the Hartford Memorial Hospital in Hartford. Valenntine was born in May of 1928 in Slinger, the zson of Fred and Mary (Scharfenberg) Mergenthaler. He attended Slinger High School. Valentine served in the United States Merchant Marines, later, the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. After his marriage to Ann V. Duehning on 23 August 1958, in Germantown, the couple lived in Slinger. Valentine was a master plumber and an all around general construction worker for various construction companies in the Washington County area, retiring in 1982. He is survived by his his wife and two children. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ray and a sister, Sally. Valentine was a member of Construction Union Local 113 of Milwaukee. Funeral services were held on Monday 28 August at the Phillip Funeral Home in Slinger where the Reverend John Tschudy officiated. Visitation was at the funeral home. Interment followed at Union Cemetery in Slinger.

Lawrence was born in the Town of Saukville, Ozaukee County on 09 December 1929 to Joseph and Louise (Ponath) Baasch. He married Tina Taylor on 09 April 1952. On 03 August 1957, he married Mary Sina. Following her death, he married Delores Fick-Kuehl on 10 September 1983. Lawrence enlisted with the United State Army in 1947 and served his country at various bases including Heidelberg, Vilsack, Grafenwoehr, Germany, Japan and Vietnam. He was discharged in 1974. Following service, he was employed at the West Bend Company and by Washington County, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, the American Legion, VFW, DAV, The Moose Lodge of West Bend, and the Newburg Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed hunting, camping and traveling. Lawrence was survived by his wife, Delores of West Bend, and seven children. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph and John; one step-son, Michael Strel; and wife, Mary Sina on 03 May 1981. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, 20 August at The Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend where Father Patrick Wendt officiated. Visitation was at the funeral home on Wednesday. Interment took place at Holy Angels Catholic Cemetery on Thursday, 31 August.

      Michael E. Schweitzer of Jackson, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 65 years on Saturday, 15 May 2004 at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee. Michael was born on 15 August 1938 in Hartford to Amor and Sybil (Bartelme) Schweitzer. As a child, he helped out at his parents’ tavern, the Silver Dollar Bar, in Richfield. Michael attended St. Boniface Grade School in Goldendale (town of Germantown) and graduated from Pius XI High School in Milwaukee. In 1961 he entered the United States Air Force, serving during the Vietnam War. He had been stationed at various locations, including Vietnam, Thailand, the Phillipines, Alaska and Florida. Following his discharge in 1973, Michael lived in Florida for a short time before returning to Wisconsin. He attended Moraine Park Technical College in Beaver Dam earning an associate degree. Michael had been employed at a number of places, finally working at Tecumseh Products in Grafton, retiring in 2003. On July 6, 1996 he married Patricia K. (Hintz) Hilgendorf in Mequon. Michael was a member of the Germantown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9202 and the IAM Local at Tecumseh Products in Grafton. He was survive dby his wife and four children. Preceding him in death was his father, Amor. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, 18 May at the Schmidt Funeral home in Jackson. Reverent Dale Kastberg officiated. Michael was buried on Wednesday in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Goldenadale.

Marvin E. Schommer

M, b. 01 January 1926, d. 31 August 2000
      Marvin E. Schommer of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 74 years on Thursday, 31 August 2000 at St. Joseph Community Hospital. Marvin was born on 01 January 1926 in Hastings, Dakota County, Minnesota, the son of Nicholas and Alvina (Rubin) Schommer. At an early age, the family moved to South Milwaukee where Marvin grew up. During World War II, he served on a minesweeper in the United States Navy, both in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. After his discharge, Marvin studied at machinists' school and became a tool and die maker, working at various tool and die shops prior to his retirement. He was united in marriage to Marilyn D. Perkins on 29 November 1947 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Kewaskum. He was survived by his wife and 10 children. Preceding him in death were two sisters, his twin Mary M. Schommer and Eileen Perkins, and two brothers, Louis and Clarence "Bud." Funeral services were held on Saturday, 02 September at the Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend with a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Father Gerald Brittain presided with burial following at Holy Angels Cemetery. Visitation was on Friday at the funeral home and on Saturday morning prior to services.

Jacob Schlosser

M, b. 24 September 1911, d. 22 August 2000
      Jacob Schlosser of Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA passed away at the age of 88 years on Tuesday, 22 August 2000 at his residence. Jacob was born on 24 September 1911 in Kewaskum, Washington County, the son of Jacob and Jennie (Strobel) Schlosser Sr. He made his home in Phoenix the last 26 years of his life. Jacob served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Joseph and Harold Schlosser, and Edward Brandt, and four sisters, Kathryn Warner, Helen Halfmann, Lillian Schlosser and Margaret Dreher. A Memorial Mass was held on Thursday, 07 September at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Kewaskum. Father Mark Jones officiated. Burial of his cremains followed in the parish cemetery.

Virgil E. Stafford

      Virgil E. Stafford of Jackson, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 76 years on Tuesday, 05 September 2000 at the Samaritan Health Center in West Bend. Virgil was born 19 August 1924 in Anvoy, Illinois[?], the son of Joseph and Florence (Sarver) Stafford. He served in the United States Navy during the attack on Pearl Harbor. After his marriage to Verna L. Kienitz on 05 October 1946 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, the couple lived in Milwaukee, and later in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas. In 1966, the couple moved to Sullivan, Jefferson County,Wisconsin, and in 1976 settled in Jackson. Virgil was a self-employed interstate semi driver for over 50 years, retiring in 1985. He was survived by his wife and two children. Virgil was a member of Jackson Memoria Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7240 and the Trinity Lutheran Church of Jackson. Funeral services were held on Friday, 08 September at the Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend. Reverend Kenneth Schmidt of Trinity Lutheran Church of Jackson officiated.. Interment was in Washington County Memorial Park in West Bend. Visitation was at the funeral home on Friday.

Jean E. Davis

F, b. circa 1919, d. 24 August 2000
      Jean Elizabeth Davis (nee Webster), an Arlington, Virginia, USA, homemaker, who was active in community groups, died at the age of 81 years on Thursday, 24 August 2000, in Arlington Hospital, after suffering a stroke. She was born in Brooklyn, Green County, Wisconsin. Mrs. Davis grew up in West Bend, Washington County where her father operated a dairy farm. She was graduated in 1938 from West Bend High School and the next year enrolled as a student at the Groves-Barnhart School for Secretaries in Madison, Dane County. From 1939 to 1943 she worked for the West Bend Aluminum Co. and for the Enger-Kress Co. Mrs. Davis, who had lived in Arlington since 1954, settled in the Washington, D.C. area in 1943 while she was serving in the Navy Waves during World War II. She earned an honorable discharge from the Waves in 1948 shortly after marrying Vernon E. Davis, a native of Louisville, Ky. In the 1960s, '70s and '80s, she was active in the Virginia Extension Homemakers, serving the Garden City, Arlington, club as secretary and president. In the 1970s, Mrs. Davis was the extension homemaker president. Her major contribution was to assemble and edit Arlington' Extension Homemaker's cookbook "Kitchen Treasures." Since the mid-1970s, Mrs. Davis had been been active in the Women's Committee for the Arlington Symphony and the Arlington Historical Society. In the 1990s, she was active with the Navy Women's Association. She also held memberships with the Smithsonian Institution, the Washington Performing Arts Society and the National Organization for Women. Her life ended peacefully after a four-year history of strokes and complications thereof. She was survived by two sons. Preceding her in death were her husband, and her parents, Wayne and Helen Webster.
