Robert W. Schmidt

Robert W. Schmidt of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 75 years on Monday, 11 September 2000 at the Cedar Lake Health Care Center in West Bend. Robert was born 03 June 1925 in Kewaskum, the son of Theodore and Marie (Kress) Schmidt. After graduating from Kewaskum High School, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the 94th Infantry in Europe during World War II. Returning to Kewaskum, Robert attended Marquette University and became an independent insurance agent. He became a rural mail carrier for the United States Post Office in Kewaskum and later for the West Bend Post Office, retiring in 1980 after 24 years of service. Robert married Rita Albrecht on 10 August 1957 at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in West Bend. Together they made their home in Kewaskum, moving to West Bend in 1986. He was a member of the Kewaskum Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Kewaskum Robert G. Romaine American Legion Post 384, the West Bend Fred A. Schaefer Veterans of Foreigh Wars Post 1393, the West Bend Country Club and Hon-E-Kor Golf Club. He was also a former member and past president of the Kewaskum Kiwanis Club, former member of the Kewaskum Rescue Squad, former Kewaskum scout leader and former coach for the Kettle Moraine Girls Softball League. He is survived by his wife and three children. Preceding him in death were a daughter, Julie; two sisters, Marjorie Koth and Rita Ferris-Martin, and a brother-in-law, Dr. James Albrecht, DDS. Funeral services were held on Friday, 15 September at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral Home in West Bend. Reverend Mark Jones of Holy Trinity Catholic Church officiated. Burial followed in Washington County Memorial Park. Visitation at the funeral home was on Friday before services.

Otto A. Laufer

Otto A. Laufer of Rubicon, Dodge County, Wisconsin, USA passed away at the age of 83 years on Wednesday, 13 September 2000 at the Linden Grove Health Care Center in Menomonee Falls, Wayukesha County. Otto was born 19 July 1917 in West Bend, Washington County, the son of Frank and Julia (Wiskerchen) Laufer. He married Beatrice Benike on 07 February 1948 at St. Kilian Catholic Church in Hartford. Otto served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He enlisted in 1941, became a second lieutenant and went overseas in 1943. He became a captain in the Air Force in 1945. Prior to entering the service, Otto worked at West Bend Aluminum for five years. After service, he worked at the West Bend Company for a couple of years and West Bend Outboard Motors/Chrysler in Hartford for almost 25 years. He retired as plant manager in Beaver Dam 13 years ago. Otto was a member of the Hartford Courtney-Carr-Milner American Legion Post 19, Knights of Columbus, and St. Kilian parish. He enjoyed working and fishing. He was survived by seven children. Preceding him in death were his wife; a son, Edward; and three brothers, Emerson, Robert and Francis. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, 15 September at St. Kilian Catholic Church in Hartford. Father Thomas Venne officiate. Interment was in St. Kilian Catholic Cemetery. The family greeted relatives and friends at the Shimon Funeral Home in Hartford.

A.D. Henderson, also known as Andy, of Newburg, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, USA passed away at the age of 67 years on Saturday, 09 September 2000 at the Veterans Hospital in Milwaukee. Andy was born 05 April 1933, the son of James and Eva (Shultz) Henderson. He served in the United States Navy and resided in Milwaukee until 1972. He then married Geraldine Harr and moved to Newburg. Andy was employed as a welder at Allis-Chalmers for 30 years, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed fishing, watching the Green Bay Packers, the Milwaukee Brewers and had been an amateur radio operator for the past 25 years. Andy was a member of both Washington and Ozaukee ham radio cubs, and was a 21-year member of M.A.R.S. (Military Affiliated Radio System). He was very dedicated in providing radio and phone-patch contacts to service men and women stationed far from home. Andy was involved in many chapters through the Veterans Administration. He was an active member of The American Legion, VFW, Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans Amputee Support Group. Andy went to the Veterans Administration Day Treatment Center every day it was open until his health started failing. He enjoyed so many of the outings and activities, but most of all his friends there. He was survived by his wife and two children. A memorial remembrance was held on Thursday, 14 September in the chapel of the Veterans Hospital in Milwaukee.

James was born on 17 May 1945 in Berwind, West Virginia, the son of James and Mary (Hall) Flannery. He married Linda Foster on 10 July 1965 in Port Washington, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. Following their marriage, Jim and Linda lived in Illinois until moving to Port Washington in 1980. They settled in Jackson in 1991. James served in the United States Army in Vietnam. For 20 years he worked at Sterling Inc. in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County. He was an elder at Living Word Lutheran Church in Jackson. James was survived by his wife and two children. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, 26 September at the Schmidt Funeral Home in Jackson where Pastor Timothy Niekerk officiated. Visitation at the funeral home was on Tuesday.

Miller was a WWII veteran with the United States Navy, a 32 Degree Mason and he enjoyed the horse patrol. He was also known as "the Mushroom Man." He was survived by one daughter. Miller was preceded in death by his wife Lucile, son David "Buzz" Schmitz, and nephew Charles Nelson Conley.

Sharon L. Cote

Sharon L. Cote (nee Oresink), of Juneau, Juneau County, Alaska, USA formerly of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin found peace and joined the angels in heaven. Her brave fight with breast cancer was lost on Friday, 29 September 2000. Sharon was 38 years of age. She was born 09 April 1962 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, the daughter of William and Karen (Kling) Oresnik. At an early age she moved to West Bend with her parents and attended West Bend schools, graduating from West Bend East High School in 1980. On 24 September 1988, she was united in marriage to David D. Cote Jr. in Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. Petty Officer Cote proudly served in the United States Coast Guard, receiving various awards, many for her superior performance. In July of 2000, she retired after 20 years of active duty. She was survived by her husband of 12 years and her three children. Preceding her in death were her mother-in-law, Phyllis Corbet, grandparents, Herman and Viola Kling and Frank and Louise Oresnik Sr. Funeral services were held on Saturday, 07 October at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral Home in West Bend. Reverend William Dushek of the Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church officiated. Visitation at the funeral home was on Saturday. A special memorial service was held on Sunday, 15 October at Aldersgate Methodist Church in Juneau, where she was a member. Sharon's ashes will be placed at her favorite places: the Mendenhall Glacier, Tracy Arms and her home in Alaska.

Schumacher of Hartford, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA passed away suddenly at the age of 79 years on Monday, 09 October 2000 at the Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. Elroy was born on 29 May 1930 in Milwaukee, the son of Herbert and Cora (Hill) Schumacher. He married Patricia Marx on 06 June 1953 at St. Kilian Catholic Church in Hartford. Elroy served his country in the National Guard. He was a member of the Hartford Lions Club and was a volunteer firefighter for the city of Hartford for 27 years. Elroy worked at International Stamping for 37 years, and enjoyed fishing and hunting, the Slinger Speedway races, collecting baseball cards, and going to the kids’ activities. He was survived by his wife and three children. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, 12 October at St. Kilian Catholic Church in Hartford. Father Michael Petrie officiated. Inurnment was at St. Kilian Catholic Cemetery.

Harold Kohn

Harold Kohn, also known as Whitey, of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 61 years on Thursday, 12 October 2000 at St. Joseph Community Hospital in West Bend. Harold was born on 07 July 1939 at home in Hartland, the son of Carl and Hazel (Dopke) Kohn. He served in the United States Army, the 101st Airborne Division. Harold was employed as a mason and cement finisher for Bonness Construction (also known as Highway Pavers) and later Payne & Dolan Inc. in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County. He loved baseball and played in high school and in the Land O’ Lakes League for many years. Harold will be remembered as a man who loved spending time with his grandchildren and being outdoors hunting, fishing and gardening. When there was a deck of cards available he was playing the hand. He had an even bigger hand when it came to helping the people that came into his life. He was survived by two chldren. Harold was preceded in death by his father, Carl Kohn, his mother, Hazel Kohn-Neumeyer (Dopke), and a brother, Roy Kohn. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, 17 October at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral Home in West Bend. Reverend George Jorenby of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Saukville officiated. Burial was in Saukville Union Cemetery on 18 October.

Judith was born on 03 September 1939 in West Bend, Washington County, the daughter of Julius and Florence (Peterson) Fassbender. On 03 September 1982, Judith married Jerry Miller and they enjoyed 18 years of marriage. Judith proudly served her country as a member of the United States Army. She was survived by her husband, Jerry, a daughter, and two stepsons. Judith was preceded in death by her daughter, Dawn Krueger; two sisters-in-law, Juanita Weiss and Myrtle Weindherdt; and three brothers-in-law, Bill, Merrill and Murray Miller. A funeral service was held on Sunday at the Wichmann Funeral Home where Reverend Mark Weiss officiated. Interment was at Highland Memorial Park. Friends were received at the funeral home on Sunday.

Palmer was survived by two children. Preceding him in death were a sister, Irene Lichtenberg, and two brothers, Edgar and Arthur. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, 24 October at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral Home in West Bend. The Reverend Joseph Fisher of Pilgrim Evangelical Lutheran Church of West Bend officiated. Robert was born on 04 July 1941 in Newburg, Ozaukee County, the son of Joseph B. and Leona (Parlow) Monday. During the Vietnam War, Bob served with the 5th Cavalry in the United States Army. He married Mary K. Sampont. He was employed for over 30 years as a driver for United Parcel Service, retiring in 1998. Robert was an honorary member of the Newburg Fire Department, a lifetime member of the Waubeka Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7037, and a member of Teamsters Local 344. He was survived by two children. Preceding him in death was his father, Joseph, on July 13, 1993. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, 27 October at Divine Word Catholic Church in Cedarburg. Reverend George Gajdos was the presider. Entombment followed on Saturday at Resurrection Cemetery in Mequon. Visitation was at the church on Friday prior to the service.

Russell W. Becker of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 65 years on Thursday, 26 October 2000 at St. Joseph Community Hospital. Russell was born on 07 April 1935 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, the son of Sherbourn and Anna (Cebrowski) Becker. He was graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1953. Russell served in the United States Army following the Korean Conflict. He later attended Spencerian College for two years, receiving his BA degree in business administration. Russell was a court reporter for Washington County for over 34 years, retiring in July of 1994, and was also the town clerk of West Bend for over 19 years (1981-2000). Following his marriage to Carole A. Niehaus on 28 May 1973 at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in West Bend. The couple lived in the West Bend area. He was survived by three children. Preceding him in death were his stepfather, Arthur Charbonneau; a brother, Sherborn; and a nephew, Doug Becker. Russell was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, the West Bend Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1398. He was an avid sports fan, devoted husband and loving father and grandpa. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, 30 October at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in West Bend. Father Jeffrey Haines officiated. Interment followed on Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Milwaukee. Visitation was at the church on Monday.

Delbert F. Busch of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA passed away at the age of 84 years on Sunday, 29 October 2000 at St. Joseph Community Hospital. Delbert was born on 30 May 1916 in Greenwood, Clark County, the son of Frederick and Alma (Goeke) Busch. He married Edith Einfeldt on 04 June 1943. Edith passed away on 20 May 1949. Delbert served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to Greenwood until his marriage to Violet Otto on 15 June 1950 in Owen. The couple then came to West Bend. Delbert was employed at the Bermico Company, formerly Line Material, and McGraw-Edison, retiring in 1981. After his retirement, Delbert worked part time as a grocery bagger at the former Prescott's Super-Value until it started to interfere with his golfing. Delbert was a member of West Bend Lodge 1398, Loyal Order of Moose. He was survived by his wife, Violewt, and three children. Preceding him in death was a son, Wayne. Private funeral services were held at the Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend where the Reverend Sharon Stier of Immanuel United Church of Christ officiated.

William was born on 12 October 1918 in Slinger, the son of Arthur and Anna (Stuettgen) Duehning. He graduated from Slinger High School in 1936, and was a life-long and well-known resident of Slinger. William served four years as a heavy equipment operator in the United States Navy Seabees in Guam and the Aleutian Islands during World War II. After returning from service, he owned and operated Duehning Construction & Excavating Company in Slinger up to the time of his death. Williaml married Gertrude C. Preceding him in death were his wife, Gertrude, on 07 February 1999; a son, Dennis "Denny" in 1981; four brothers, Ed, Harry, John and Ralph Duehning; two sisters, Emmie Greenbank and Lorraine Horsch; seven brothers-in-law, Pat Horsch, Whitey Merganthaler, Warren McCardle, Phil, Dick and Leo Nowicki and Bob Greenbank; two sisters-in-law, Rose Miller and Christine Nowicki. Williaim was a 50-plus member of Local 139 International Union of Operating Engineers, a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Slinger, and a member of the Hartford Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8834. He was a certified Master Plumber, a retired member of the Slinger Fire Department, a member of the Midwest Watch Fob Collectors, the American Legion and the 23rd U.S. Navy Seabees Association. Funeral services were held on Sunday, 05 November at the Phillip Funeral Home in Slinger where Father Norman Schwartz officiated. Closing of the casket prayers were at the funeral home on Monday followed by internment at Old St. Peter's Cemetery in Slinger. Visitation was at the funeral home on Sunday, 05 Nov.

Lawrence P. Gass

Lawrence P. Gass of Hartford, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA passed away at the age of 81 years on Friday, 03 November 2000 at the Hartford Memorial Hospital. Lawrence was born in the town of Addison on 10 August 1919, the son of John and Christine (Heinecke) Gass. He married Mary Jane Ritger on 02 August 1947 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Allenton. Lawrence was a farmer. After retiring from farming, he worked for Leimbach Construction and Northern Lakes Construction. He was one of the original members of the Allenton Fohl-Martin American Legion Post 483. Lawrence was a member of St. Kilian Catholic Church. He served his country in the United States Army during WW II. Lawrence was survived by his wife, Mary Jane. He was preceded in death by his three children at birth; six sisters; and one brother. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, 06 November at St. Kilian Catholic Church, Hartford where Father James Strupp officiated. The family greeted relatives and friends on Monday at the church. Inurnment took place at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Allenton.

Gordon Edward Schroeder

Gordon Edward Schroeder, a Memorial service was held Tuesday at St. Boniface Episcopal Church in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, USA for Mr.Schroeder of Thiensville who died at the age of 82 years on 02 November 2000. Following the memorial services a party, at Gordon’s request, was held at the Mequon Howard J. Schroeder American Legion Post 447. Mr. Schroeder was a certified public accountant. He was retired from his own accounting and tax-service company, Anderson & Schroeder, in Cedarburg. He was also retired from Phillip Lithographs Inc. of Grafton. Howard was a disabled veteran and a member of James S. Hays Lodge #331 F & AM, the Wisconsin Scottish Rite Bodies and Tripoli Shrine and its Jesters. He was also a member and past president of the Cedarburg-Grafton Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was survived by his wife of 63 years Shirley M. Cosper, and two children.

Robert C. Staltzmann

Robert C. Saltzmann, a longtime Cedarburg, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, USA resident died at the age of 75 years on 06 November 2000. Mr. Saltzmann was born in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County on 19 February 1925, the son of Herman and Emma (Sengbusch) Saltzman. Robert served his country in the United States Army. Mr. Saltzmann married Arlene Arnold on 14 June 1947. After his retirement the couple moved to the northwoods, where he was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. Robert was survived by his wife Arlene Staltzmann, and his three children. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Esther, brother Alfred and daughter Nancy. A military memorial service was held on Saturday at Hope Lutheran Church in Land O’ Lakes, Vilas County.

Forest F. Survis

Forest F. Survis, also known as Speed, of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 81 years on Saturday, 11 November 2000, at his residence. Forest was born on 13 March 1919 in St. James, Minnesota, the son of Daniel and Bessie (Cook) Survis. When he was a young child, the family moved to the West Bend area. During World War II, Forest served in the Inited States Army Air Corps as a staff sergeant in the 8th Air Force stationed in England. Upon his return from service, he was united in marriage to Ruth Bandle on 02 April 1945 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in West Bend. Forest was a member of the Wesy Bend Fred A. Schaefer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1393 and retired from A. O. Smith in Milwaukee in 1979, after 23 years of service. He was most known for his music, and played both guitar and violin. His two bands were "Speed Survis and His Cowboys" and "The Happy Ramblers." Forest started playing for WHBL Radio when he was 16. He owned Survis Music Stores in West Bend and Adell and taught music to many students. Forest was survived by his wife Ruth and eight children. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann, two grandchildren and a brother and sister. The funeral services was held on Thursday, 16 November at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral Home in West Bend. Reverend George Mumm officiated. Burial followed in Newark Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home was on Thursday.

Donald L. Cuttie

Donald L. Cuttie was born on 04 June 1918 in Joliet, Will County, Illinois, USA and passed away on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010. Don graduated from Mount Carmel High School in Chicago and was veteran of World War II, serving with honor in the European Theater as adjutant of a 3,000-bed hospital. In March 1945, Don attended additional Army Staff information education at Cité Universitaire in Paris, France. His decorations include a Bronze Star and WWII Victory Medal. Don returned home and began a career in advertising, joining his father-in-law’s agency in Chicago, then several others, including partnership in his own agency. Don retired to Big Cedar Lake in Slinger, where his wife Nola’s parents, Esther Robbert Salomon of New Orleans and Arthur Salomon of Chicago met in 1917, escaping the cities summer heat. Their first photo in an early family album reads, "It all began at Big Cedar Lake in 1917." Summers were celebrated at the lake by four generations of our family.
Donald is survived by his son and daughter. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Nola Salomon Cuttie of Chicago Illinois; a son, Michael Robbert; brother, Raymond Joseph; and his parents, Raymond J. and Julia Scagnelli Cuttie. Service and Interment were private at Glencoe Union Church Memorial Garden in Glencoe, Illinois. Memorials are appreciated to the Samaritan Health Care Center, 531 E. Gerald A. Brockway, also know as Jerry, passed away at the age of 71 years on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010, at his home in West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA. Gerald was born on 22 January 1939 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, the son of Donald and Lillian (Birno) Brockway. He served his country honorably in the United States Army and was employed at A.O. Smith and Tower Automotive for many years. Gerald was better known as “Papa.” His grandchildren adored him, and he showed them just how much love a Papa could have – tons! He found his greatest joys in life by spending time with his family. Gerald often spoke of how happy he was, now more than ever … those who love him know why. Hey was very talented and carved wooden keepsakes such as walking sticks, jewelry boxes and magical wands painted especially for those he loved. Gerald shared his time and talents not just with his family, but with friends and neighbors as well. He will be sadly missed. Gerald was survived by his loving wife, Bonnie, and four children. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack Brockway. A private family service was held at a later date.

Richard A. Keyes, of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA passed away at the age of 73 years on Friday, 12 November 2010 at Cedar Bay West. Richard was born on 18 October 1937 in Bluefield, West Virginia, the son of Olin P. and Ocie (Boyd) Keyes. He graduated from Beaver High School in the class of 1955. Richard served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps for nine years. He was united in marriage to Joyce Breitwisch on 21 November 1964 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County. In 1965, he earned a civil engineering degree from Marquette University. Richard retired in 1995 from Milwaukee County, where he was the director of environmental engineering services. He was a member of Smoky Hollow Muzzle Loaders, Menomonee Falls Rod & Gun Club, and was an Eagle Scout. Richard was survived by his wife, Joyce of West Bend, and two sons. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Olin. Private family services were held. Burial followed in Washington County Memorial Park with full military honors. Memorials in Richard’s name to the Disabled American Veterans are appreciated by the family.
