M, b. 26 February 1952, d. 28 July 2006
Sgt. Michael A. Towler Sr., also known as Mike, of the town of Trenton, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA, was greeted by his Lord with open arms on Friday, 28 July 2006, when he passed away at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital, surrounded by his family, due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was 54 years old. Mike was born on 26 February 1952 in Milwaukee, son of Victor and Celine (nee Renzelman) Towler. He graduated from Nathan Hale High School in 1970. His tour of duty took him from the Continental United States to Wobeck, Germany, and then to the Aleutian chain in Alaska working in the Special Services Unit. He was honorably discharged in October of 1977 with the rank of sergeant. During this time, he married Jane Finkler and started a family of three. After returning home from his military duties, he settled in West Bend and was a full-time employee for the Washington County Sheriff’s Department as a jailer and dispatcher, while working part time for the West Bend Police Department as a police officer. On Jan. 1, 1980, Mike was offered a full-time position with the West Bend Police Department and began his 26-year career.

Among his favorite activities was riding his Harley with Debbie, hunting, building things for those he loved, but above all, spending time with family was most important to him. Mike was a member of Northbrook Church in Richfield and was baptized into his new faith on Nov. 21, 1999. Michael had an active and growing personal relationship with the Lord, which over time transformed him into the caring and giving man he became. He was not only the first to offer his help to those in need, but also the one his family and friends turned to for help or advice.
He was deeply missed and forever in the hearts of his beloved wife, soulmate and best friend of eight years, Debbie; his cherished children, Christy (special friend Manuel Cortez) Towler of West Bend, Michael Towler Jr. of West Bend, Joshua (Emily) Lemke of Sheboygan, Micah Lemke of Saukville, Jessica (special friend Ryan Davies) Lemke of Saukville and Adam (Julie) Lemke of Newburg; adored grandchildren, Taylor Towler, Cassie Walker, Hart and Hailey King, Samuel Lemke and Noah Lemke; loving mother, Celine Towler of West Allis; and parents-in-law, Jim and Lorrie Bernard of Prescott, Arizona. Corporal Stephan William Castner
M, b. 15 December 1978, d. 24 July 2006
Uncommonly individualistic in word and deed, Stephen William Castner died fighting a war that, despite its growing unpopularity in his homeland, failed to shake his faith in its purpose. "Stephen rebuffed those people encouraging him to ‘get out’ of this deployment," said Spc. Gregory Weller, who was Castner’s communications chief for two years before deployment. " He refused many opportunities to avoid coming here. This is exactly where he wanted to be, and what he wanted to be doing, with who he wanted to be doing it with." Just three days after arriving in the Middle East, Corporal Castner, 27, died 24 July 2006 in Tallil, Iraq, after a roadside explosive detonated beneath his armored Humvee. He was the 58th Wisconsin resident to die in Iraq, and the first from Cedarburg.
Castner was born on 15 December 1978 in Milwaukee, son of Stephen L. and Kathryn J. (nee Nielsen) Castner. He graduated from Cedarburg High School in 1997 and then enlisted in the Air Force, specializing in electronic communications. The Airman 1st Class spent three years at the 20th Air Force Missile Operations Center at Warren AFB in Wyoming. After leaving the Air Force he enrolled at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Campus in the school of Architecture and Urban Planning and worked in the Student Technology Services program of the school’s Information and Media Technologies department. Once, while trying to understand the Windows registry, which controls all the functions the operating system can execute, Castner began deleting random parts, observing what happened to his machine after each purge. Slowly his machine degraded until it was unusable. "He finally destroyed the computer, but learned how the registry worked," says friend Michael Grypp, an I&MT technical services specialist at UW-Milwaukee. "That was Castner at his questioning and fearless best."
In October 2004, Castner enlisted in the Wisconsin Army National Guard as a radio operator and maintainer for Battery A, 1st Battalion, 121st Field Artillery. He transferred to study land use planning at University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Campusin in August 2005 and was called to active duty this April of 2006.
He is survived by his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. No flowers were accepted for the memorial service. The family has requested memorials to the Cedarburg Community Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 654, Cedarburg, WI 53012.
The family received friends on Saturday at the Concordia University Field House, 12800 North Lake Shore Road, Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, USA. A memorial service started promptly after the visitation.

WHAT MOM TOOK: Most often when we think of mom we think of what she’s given - the softness of a loving touch, a gentle guide for living, a nightly tip-toe in a room, an understanding look - but sometimes when we think of mom we think of what she took. She took a child and taught it how to live this life with pride, she took those kindergarten tears and kept them all inside. She took the hands that longed to hold her child and not let go, used them to push her child along the way, to thrive and grow. Took time to do some other things like sew, and clean and cook, and never thought to ask for thanks for all the things she took.
