John Leonard Oelerich

M, b. 01 November 1927, d. 20 November 2012
John Leonard Oelerich, also known as Jack, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 85 years on 20 November 2012 at Aurora Hospital in Grafton, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, USA. His beloved wife and daughter, Jane, were with him as he responded to God’s call. John was born on 01 November 1927, son of Anna Oelerich (nee Utschig) and John Oelerich Sr. in New Holstein, Calumet Counrty. He grew up on a farm with his two brothers, Roger and Gerald. This is most likely where he learned the very strong work ethic that he sustained throughout his life. John enjoyed and excelled at baseball; he even tried out for the White Sox. Soon after graduating from Chilton High School, Jack joined the military where he served from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War. Upon returning from Korea, he attended Spencerian Business School in Milwaukee and graduated in public accounting. While in college he met and fell in love with a pretty young nurse, Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Will. They were married on 15 September 1956 and had four children, David, Mary, Jim and Jane. Jack was a successful businessman working first as a public accountant and then at Medalist Industries (president of Standard Sheet Metal). He began his career in real estate in 1985; he and Betty partnered as realtors for 10 years. Throughout their lives, Jack and Betty enjoyed a busy social life, including many friends, traveling and often playing cards to the wee hours of the night. When grandchildren arrived in 1981, Jack began a new role in life. He is grandpa to 22 children and two great-grandchildren. He is loved by so many (mostly in thanks to his youngest daughter who gave him 14 grandchildren). Grandpa made it a priority to be involved in his grandchildren’s lives. In 1990, Jack helped start the Ozaukee County Senior Softball League. This could very well be considered one of his greatest pleasures; providing fun, competition and companionship for many men over 55. Jack pitched with the senior league until he was 82 years old. He then became a team manager for the next two years.

At the age of 70, Jack accepted Jesus Christ into his life and began living for Jesus. He was known for sharing his faith. He believed strongly in forgiveness and living in peace with each other. Jack was known for speaking his mind. On 31 October 2012, Jack was taken to the emergency room with chest pains and subsequently went into cardiac arrest. For the next 20 days, there were many ups and downs, but Jack always trusted in God and was surrounded by the love of his family and friends. In his weakest moments, Jack would slowly remove the oxygen mask and softly proclaim "There is a God."

Jack was survived by his wife, Betty; and his children, David, Mary Seubert (Ron), Jim (Lisa) and Jane Cantrall (Darren). He was greatly missed by his grandchildren, (David’s) Christopher, Justin, Kaleb; (Mary’s) Troy (Lysney) and Gretchen; and (Jim’s) Stephanie, Mathew, Michael; (Jane’s) Abigail, Josiah, Jonathan, Anna, Elizabeth, Jeremiah, Hadassah, Magdalene, Stephen, Rosalind, Evelyn, Natasha, Micaiah, Tabitha; and two great-grandsons, (Troy’s) Damian and Beckett. Jack was survived by two sister-in-laws, Dorothy Oelerich and Karen Bennin. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and two brothers. Funeral services was held on 27 November at Eernisse Funeral Home, 1167 Washington Avenue, Cedarburg. A time of gathering occurred prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.
