Dick Lorenzen
M, b. 04 April 1926, d. 10 August 2007
Richard James Lorenzen, also known as Dick, fought cancer for 13 years before it defeated him on 10 August 2007. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Patricia (Pat) Lasecke. Dick was born on Easter morning in Racine 04 Apr 1926, son of Thor and Helen Lorenzen. He was born a big boy with a big heart that served him well in athletics and also undergoing chemotherapy later in his 60s when he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Dick was the first of his family to graduate from high school and he went on to earn a Master’s Degree plus over 30 credits beyond. He spent two yrears in the United States Navy. Dick then attended University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus, earning a BS degree in Mathematics and Science. He earned a Maste degree from Purdue University. While at Stevens Point, Dick received the Colonel Hirzy award for scholarship, leadership and athletics, and lettered in three sports (football, basketball and track). Dick taught mathematics as well as coaching four sports (football, basketball, track & baseball). He taught at: Rollo, Illinois, Weyauwega and Juneau before coming to Hartford. He taught at Hartford High School for 32 years, coached all the sports and was responsible for introducing computers into the High School. Richard was a formidable teacher and is well remembered by his former students.
Richard built his own cottage over two summers at Phillips with the help of his teen age son, David. Dick was a tremendous fisherman and he has over 129 legal size muskies to his credit. Dick figured that he had to ‘boat’ at least 10 muskies for every legal size one, and he practiced catch-and-release. At least one of the muskies was over 50" long because Dick (who is over 6’4" tall) held it up in the boat and the tail was still in the water. Most of his fishing was during the summer when he and Pat had a cottage on Wilson Lake near Phillips. Dick enjoyed that time of his life immensely. When he finally gave up the cottage, he and Pat took up golfing and spent many days at the Hartford Country Club. Dick also hunted deer for many years and he and his boys spent time "in the woods" at Phillips and also with a friend, Ron Schultz. They all enjoyed many a meal of venison, as well as walleye; venison sausage was a favorite.
Dick was Honorary Chairman for the Hartford/Slinger Relay for Life in 2000. He talked about the many advances in cancer care and his painful experience of losing his son to melanoma. Relay for Life has been credited with earning many dollars and helping with the fight to defeat cancer. Dick lived another 7 years after; a credit to all the new research being done. Travel was another passion of Pat and Dick. Their travels took them to: Cancun, Nassau, Russia, Spain, Mexico, Canada, Nova Scotia, The Rock of Gibraltar, Morocco (Dick sat in Winston Churchill's chair), Alaska, Germany, Egypt, Israel, Scotland, England, Hawaii, Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Ireland and a little bit of France. Then they continued to: Greece, Athens, Santorini, Rhodes, Turkey, Dikili, Istanbul, Bosporus Strait, the Ukraine, Italy, Yalta, Odessa and Rome. Dick’s favorite was the rivers of Germany but he was most inspired with the island of Santorini with the white building which looked like snow from the cruise ship. Russia was the most impressive.
Belonging to the Lions club was an honor for Dick and he was Vice President in 2003 and 2004. He was especially pleased that the Lions donated to many worthwhile causes. He was a former Worshipful Master at the Hartford Masonic Temple No 120. Dick was a member of the Hartford Courtney Carr Milner American Legion Post 19. His church, The First United Methodist Church, was important to him and he sang with the Men’s Choir for many years.
Richard was survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia; one daughter, Kate from Marathon, and two sons, Bill (Kari) of Overland Park, Kansas and David (Patrice) of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; one daughter-in-law (Susan) of Rochester, Michigan, one sister, Dorothy Lloyd, of San Bento, Texas; and six grandchildren: Adam (EuNice), Nick (Abby), Missy, Eric, Kira, and Renee. He was preceded in death by his parents as well as a beloved son, Thomas.
The funeral service was celebrated on Monday, 13 August at the First United Methodist Church where Pastor Brian Kundinger officiated. Visitation was at First United Methodist Church, 738 West Monroe Avenue in Hartford.

Lorenzen lived a life of determination
By JORDAN WEISSMANN
15 August 2007
Dick Lorenzen treated his fight with cancer as he did most challenges - with a simple, quiet determination.
The diagnosis - non-Hodgkin's lymphoma - came in 1994, a few months before his 68th birthday. His 41-year-old son, Tom, had been struggling with melanoma for about five years, and Dick's strong presence had led the family through that ordeal until Tom died in 1995. His own cancer was relatively curable, and he started chemotherapy, treating it like he would any other obligation. "He set a goal and there was nothing that was going to get in the way of it," said his son Bill Lorenzen, 52. "And that was to defeat it." Dick Lorenzen died last week at the age of 81. He had fought his cancer into remission twice and used his personal battle as an opportunity to encourage and aid others with the disease.
Born April 4, 1926, in Racine, Dick graduated from high school and went to enlist in the Navy, but was turned down because of his weak eyesight. He was later drafted, and when in line to be processed, Lorenzen confronted a draft official who marked him down for the Army. "He said, 'My grandfather was in the Navy, my father was in the Navy and I want to be in the Navy,' " his wife, Pat, recalled. "So he just stood there blocking the line until they checked 'Navy.' Well, the whole thing had been a bluff because his father had been in the Army." He was stationed in Pensacola, Fla., for two years and then attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. There, the 6-foot-4-inch science and math major played football and, in his senior year, met Pat in a math class.
The two married after Lorenzen's graduation. Dick taught high school math in several cities because the couple moved to and from Rollo, Ill., Weyauwega and Juneau, before settling in Hartford. Dick began a career at Hartford Union High School that spanned 32 years. He headed the math department and, despite objections from the superintendent, negotiated with a local company to buy its used computers and install them for students' use.
He and his wife had four children: Tom, Bill, David, 47, and Kate, 56. Bill recalled his father as a quiet but loving man, a product of a time that valued strong and silent men. "That was the era they grew up in," he said. "The (George) Patton era. The John Wayne era. Those were the heroes of the day."
He was methodical and dedicated with his goals, Bill said. He built two lakeside cottages by hand, learning how as he went, and completed a master's degree in math from Purdue University over five summers, after being sponsored by General Electric. Lorenzen retired from teaching in 1988 and started working for community organizations and traveling the world. He reacted to his son's cancer by trying to research the most current treatments and formulate a plan for the family. Then came his own illness and, in 1995, Tom's death. Despite losing a son, he managed to fight his way to remission, which lasted for six years.
In 2000, after a second bout, he was asked to be the honorary chairman for the local Relay for Life chapter. By then, his fight was well known in the community and had become a symbol for hope, Pat said. He continued working for the relay committee for years afterward. He also made himself a source of support for other cancer patients, particularly members of his church. "He encouraged other people just to keep fighting," Pat said.
The funeral is today at First United Methodist Church in Hartford at 5 p.m.
