He started working at age 10 and left school after eighth grade to help support his parents and siblings during the depression. At age 17, Jerry volunteered to serve his country in World War II by enlisting in the United States Navy and serving as an aircraft radio operator in the European Theatre. He served the duration of the war and was honorably discharged as a second class petty officer. After the war, Jerry returned to Cedarburg and finished high school in two and one-half years and graduated with honors. At Cedarburg High School he met the love of his life, Kathryn Bach. They were married in Cedarburg in 1949. Beginning in 1952, Jerry literally built the house in which he and Kathryn raised their eight children. He started working for the United States Post Office while still in high school and, after 40 years, retired from the postal service in 1986. Jerry loved to travel, he loved to ride his bike and, most of all, he loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
