Lorraine E. Marino
F, b. 31 May 1920, d. 02 March 2010
Lorraine E. Marino (nee Young), formerly of Joliet, Illinois, died at home in the loving arms of her family on 02 March 2010. She had lived in West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin for over three years in the dedicated care of her niece, Dianne Horlamus, Dianne’s husband Pat, and Diana Ellingson, a woman who helped look after her and became a dear friend. Lorraine’s beloved dog Benji was always at her side. Lorraine was born Lorraine Young on 31 May 1920 in Park Falls, Price County. With the onset of World War II, she began the adventure of her life in the Air WAC, stationed in Nevada where she helped train and test pilots. After the war, she studied at Marquette University, but left after one year in order to look after her mother, Emmaline. In the early fifties, she married Joseph Marino and went on to live in Joliet, Illinois for over fifty years. She continued to care for her mother long after Joe died of ulcers she suspected were due to the stress of his work as a heavy equipment operator and restaurant chef. In Joliet, she worked as a copy editor, waitress, and inspector at the Joliet Arsenal. She then worked at Caterpillar until her retirement. She was respected at her work for her intelligence and dedication, but her closest relationships were with her family, friends, and neighbors. She presented herself as a crusty and independent woman, and she was, but she was generous and loving to those close to her. She was one tough lady, and she looked after her own. She outlived her two older sisters, Bernice and Thelma, and a younger brother, Don, as well as her best friends, Katie and Fuzz. She leaves behind three children. In accordance with her wishes, there was no service or burial. Instead, on Sunday, 23 May 2010, there was a celebration of her life at the home of Pat and Dianne Horlamus in West Bend for her family and friends.
