      Harvey J. Knop of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 82 years on Monday, 14 February 2000 at his residence. Harvey was born on 16 June 1917 in Richfield to Edward Knop and Louisa Nehrbass. He was raised in the Newburg area and served in the United States Army during World War II. After his marriage to Hildegard M. July on 19 April 1941, at St. Mary Rectory in Barton, the couple lived in Barton. He was an auto mechanic in the West Bend area for Ted Lauck, and later the city of West Bend, retiring in 1980. Preceding him in death were a sister and a brother. He was a member of St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Church, the Loyal Order of Moose 1398 of West Bend, the West Bend Lt. Ray Dickop American Legion Post 36 and the West Bend Fred A. Schaefer Veterans of Foreigh Wars Post 1393. Funeral service were held on Wednesday, 16 February at the Phillip Funeral Home in West Bend. Father Patrick Wendt officiated. Burial followed at St. Mary Cemetery in West Bend.

Donald M. Thomas

      Donald M. Thomas of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 73 years on Monday, 14 February 2000 at St. Luke Medical Center in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County. Donald was born on 02 October 1926 in Kenosha, Kenosha County to the late Clarence Thomas and Ella Maelstrom. After graduating from high school in Kenosha, he enlisted in the United States Army serving overseas during World War II in the Pacific Theater and the occupation of Japan. Donald was discharged in Novemberof 1946. On 24 May 1952, he married Patricia Tourtelotte at St. George Catholic Church, Kenosha. In 1964 the couple moved to West Bend. Don worked for the Wisconsin Telephone Company, first as a lineman and later in sales and marketing. He retired in 1982 after 35 years of service. For saving the life of another, Don earned the Wisconsin Bell Vail Award for Heroism twice, in 1948 and 1953, and also the Carnegie Hero Award in 1953. He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church of West Bend and the Wisconsin Ch. 4 Ameritech Pioneers. After retirement, Don and Pat spent time traveling, and his hobby of antiquing became more of a full-time commitment. He was preceded him in death by his twin sisters, Dorothy and Vivian. A memorial Mass was held on 21 February at Holy Angels Catholic Church in West Bend.

Elmer J. Lawton Jr.

      Elmer J. Lawton Jr. of the town of Polk, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died on Monday, 14 February 2000 at St. Joseph Community Hospital in West Bend. He was 82 years old. Elmer was born to Elmer J. Lawton Sr. and Margaret Smith on 24 April 1918 in Brookfield, Waukesha County and was raised in Marcy. Elmer served in the United States Army during World War II. He married Dorothy J. Bailey on 02 June 1945 at St. John Cathedral in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County. The couple moved to the Jackson, Washington County area in 1953. Elmer was a welder for the Milwaukee Railroad for more than 55 years, retiring in 1985. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Sylveseter "Bud" and one grandson, Joey Tennies. Visitation was held at the Phillip Funeral Home in Slinger on Wednesday, 16 February. A Mass of Christian Burial followed at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Slinger with Father Robert J. Bales officiating. Cremation took place at Parkveiw Cremations of Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac County.

Harold M. Kehoe

      Harold M. Kehoe of Katzenbach, town of Polk, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 85 years on Tuesday, 08 February 2000 at St. Joseph Community Hospital in West Bend. Harold was born to John Kehoe and Annie Bolte on 30 December 1914 in Eage River, Vilas County where he was raised. He served as a medic with the United States Army during World War II. Harold worked many years in various trades. He was a member of the Allenton Fohl-Martin American Legion Post 483, the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, the International Woodworkers of America, M.&H. Zinc Workers Union Local #80 of La Salle, Illinois and the Electrical Worker's Benefit Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Art, Lawrence, Martin, Jim and Edgar, and one sister-in-law. A memorial service with the Fohl-Martin Post #483 was held on Monday, 14 February at the Phillip Funeral Home in West Bend. Cremation took place at Parkview Creamtions of Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac.

Stan Obermiller

      Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, USA resident Stan Obermiller died on 06 February 2000 at his home. He was born in Faith, Norman County, Minnesota to Frank and Josephine Obermiller on 01 December 1914. Mr. Obermiller graduated from Mahnomen High School, Mahnomen, Mahnomen County in 1931, receiving the American Legion Award. He attended North Dakota State University and Marquette University pursuing the field of journalism. World War II intervened and he served as a court reporter for the 5th Army in the South Pacific. In 1946 he married the former Elaine Bursch. Mr. Obermiller had a pilot’s license. He was also involved in various sports including; skiing, whitewater rafting, hot-air ballooning, and waterskiing. He motorcycled in Norway/Sweden, Alaska, the British Isles, New Zealand, Cyprus and the High Alps while in his 70s. Mr. Obermiller was the founder and owner of Palette Shop Inc. in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County. Memberships included: Milwaukee Area Teachers of Art; Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors; Men’s Sketch Club; Cream City Calligraphers Guild; Wisconsin Regional Artists Association; Knights of Columbus (where he was past Grand Knight); National Art Materials Trade Association (where he was past president and member of its Hall of Fame). His wife , Elaine, died in 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents and 24 half brothers and sisters. After a Christian Mass of Burial at St. James Catholic Church in Mequon, officiated by Father Gregory Spitz and Father Gerald Hauser, Mr. Obermiller was laid to rest in Resurrection Cemetery in Mequon. The burial location is section 12, row 18, grave 106.

Rudolph J. Heinecke

Rudolph was born on 01 August 1921 in Theresa to Joseph Heinecke and Theresa Knaber. He married Loraine Langenecker on 24 October 1959 in Allenton, Washington County. Loraine passed away in 1994. Rudolph was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Army in the following campaigns: Tunisian Algeria, French Moroccan, Sicilian, Normanday, Northern France, Andennes Rhineland Central Europe. He received the Distinguished Unit Badge, First Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct American Defense Service Ribbon and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon. Rudolph was employed at Baker Canning Company in Theresa. He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, was a 50-year member of the Theresa Fire Department, and a member of the Theresa Miller-Justman-Guelig American Legion Post 270 for 55 years. Preceding him in death were two sisters and a brother. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, 18 February at St. Theresa Catholic Church. Fr. Vincent Holubowicz officiated. Burial followed at St. Theresa Memorial Garden in Theresa. Graveside military rites were conducted by the Miller-Justman-Guelig American Legion Post 270.

A private inturment was held at Southeastern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove, Racine County. Mr. Lamp was born in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County on 01 May 1918 to William H. Lamp Sr. and Annie Siewert. A 1936 graduate of Grafton High School, he married Elsie Fritsch in St. Louis, Missouri on 21 June 1942. Mr. Lamp served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 and was a member of Rose-Harms American Legion Post 355 in Grafton, CBIVA Milwaukee Basha and the Cedarburg-Grafton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10171. Mr. Lamp worked as a laborer at Pabst Brewing Co. for more than 30 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and two brothers.

Paul P. Strobel

      Paul P. Strobel of Plymouth, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 82 years on Thursday, 09 March 2000 at Valley View Medical Center. He was born on 26 December 1917 in Hartford, Washington County to Philip Strobel and Bertha Kern. Paul graduated from Plymouth High School in 1936 and served in the United States Army Signal Corps and the Air Corps from June of, 1942 until November of 1945. He was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone and the Galapagos Islands. Paul was also in the Civilian Conservation Corps. On 13 June 1944 he married Angeline Leonard in Baker, Fallon County, Montana. They lived in Cascade and Plymouth most of their married Life. Angeline preceded Paul in death on 01 July 1977. He worked for Railway Express and was employed by Stokley Van Camp for 36 years as office manager and warehouse supervisor until his retirement in 1984. Paul was also employed by Central Wrap for many years. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Paul belonged to the National Rifle Association and the Plymouth Veterans of Foreign Wars World Cheese Center Post #5612. He was a honorary member of the Rhine-Plymouth Field and Stream.

Paul was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Strobel, and two sisters, Virginia Tupper and Ethel Payne. A funeral Mass was held Monday, 13 March at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Reverend Dennis Van Beek, pastor of the church, officiated. Burial was at Our Lady of the Lakes Cemetery in Cascade, Sheboygan County. Military rites were performed by the Plymouth Veterans of Foreign Wars World Cheese Center Post #5612 on Sunday evening at 6 p.m.

Sherman C. Carr

      Sherman C. Carr of Hartford, Washngton County, Wisconsin, USA passed away at the age of 83 years on Wednesday, 15 March 2000, at his residence. He was born on 10 January 1917 in Marion, Grant County, Indiana to Charles Carr and Ethel Lew. Sherman married Marianne Fara on 07 February 1942 at Holy Trinity Church in Newburg. He was a member of the National Guard of Wisconsin 121st Field Artillery, 32nd Division. Sherman served in active federal service in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy. He taught radio procedure to the Air Force at Truax Field, Madison, Dane County before entering the Navy in World War II. After service he was employed as a radio operator for a ship-to-shore station in Port Washington, Ozaukee County. Sherman was a broadcast engineer with WTMJ, the Milwaukee Journal radio station, and was affiliated with the building of WTMJ-FM. He built the Hartford Radio Station WTKM; its first broadcast was in 1951. Sherman was also employed with The West Bend Company, Outboard Motors, and Chrysler Outboard Motors as an electrical engineer. Later, he worked part time as emergency director for Washington County and then full time as director, retiring in 1989.

Sherman was an amateur radio operator for many years. He operated a phone patch communication system for the Circus Train and served for more than 30 years with outstanding contributions in the creation of the Ham Radio Skywarn program in Wisconsin, which helped protect the public from severe weather threats for many years, thus receiving the National Weather Service honors. He was a member of the Hartford Courtney-Carr-Milner American Legion Post 19. Sherman's trip of a lifetime occurred 12 years ago when he sailed back to the United States from Sidney, Australia with his son, Michael, who was posted aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter "Glacier." Sherman operated the "ham shack," patching ham phone calls through to loved ones from those aboard.

Funeral services was held on Saturday, 18 March at the Shimon Funeral Home in Hartford.

Francis served in the United States Army in World War II from March 1943 until February 1946. He was a former employee of Brink's Armored Car Service in Chicago, retiring in March 1983. The couple moved to West Bend in April of 1985. Preceding him in death were two brothers, John (Agnes) and Joseph. He was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Church, the Alllenton Fohl-Martin American Legion Post 483, St. Jude League, Chicago Teamster Local 725, and the Veterans of WWII-China/Burma and India Theater (CBI). Funeral services were held Saturday, 25 March at the Phillip Funeral Home inf West Bend. Father Jeffrey Haines officiated. Interment followed in St. Lawrence Cemetery, St. Lawrence.

Gerald R. Engstad

      Gerald R. Engstad of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 74 years on Saturday, 25 March 2000. Gerald was born on 20 July 1925 in Onalaska, La Crosse County to Orris Engstad and Hulda Johnson. On 16 November 1946, he married Dorothea Farris in Onalaska. A sister, June Klar, passed away in 1996. Mr. Engstad served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II in the 8th Air Corps. He flew B-17s based in England. Gerald graduated from La Cross State University in 1950 and taught in elementary schools in Onalaska and West Bend for 11 years. In 1987 he retired after having been principal at Decorah School in West Bend for 26 years. His joy was in teaching children and working with teachers. He served his Lord and Savior by participating in activities at St. John's Lutheran Church and in his daily life. Besides his church, Gerry was also a member of the 91st Bomb Group Memorial Association and the Washington County Retired Educators Association. Funeral services were held Tuesday, 28 March at St. John's Lutheran Church at Sixth and Decorah in West Bend. Reverend Cal Seban officiated. Burial followed on Wednesday in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend.

Robert V. Rehm

      Robert "Bob" Rehm of Lehigh Acres, Lee County, Florida, USA, formerly of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin died at the age of 82 years on Thursday, 23 March 2000. Robert was born on 04 August 1917 in West Bend, where he lived until enlisting in the United States Army in 1940. He spent six year in the military service, the last 38 months overseas. Robert landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day plus 3, fought through Europe, earned his Purple Heart in late 1944, just prior to the Battle of the Bulge, and was honorably discharged in May of 1945. In 1945 he married Mary Ellen, and celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary in 1995. Robert retired from the United States Post Office in West Bend after 27 years of service. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, joining in 1946 and transferring his membership to the Lehigh Acres Post in 1972. He was also a member of the Masonic Order, being raised on 25 May 1950 in West Bend Lodge No. 344. He transferred his membership to the lodge in Lehigh Acres in 1971. Robert served as Worshipful Master of Lodge 344 in 1957. He was an Elder of the First Christian Church in Lehigh Acres, for 13 years, and was made an Elder Emeritus in 1997. A Celebration of Life was conducted Wednesday, 29 March at Lee Memorial Park in Lehigh Acres with Reverend John Saleeby officiating. Interment followed in Lee Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, 18 February 2010 at St. James Catholic Church, W220 N6588 Town Line Road in Menomonee Falls. Procession to St. James Rosehill Cemetery followed. Leo was a member and past Commander of the Menomonee Falls Lt. Ray Diskop American Legion Post 382 and a member of the Sussex Horne-Mudlitz Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6377.

      Michael D. Lewis of Sussex, Waukesha County, Wisconsin, USA died at the age of 70 years on Monday, 08 March 2010. Michael was born on 23 December 1939, the son of Walter and Ione Lewis. He was the husband of Kathleen. A Memorial Service was held on Thursday, 11 March at the Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home in Menomonee Falls. He was a military veteran and a member of the Hubertus, Goetz-St. Louis American Legion Post 522.

Hubert B. Scott

      Hubert B. Scott of West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA, formerly of Madison, Lake county, South Dakota, passed away at the age of 73 years on Monday, 26 April 2010 at his daughter’s residence in West Bend.

Hubert was born 31 December 1936 in Artesian, Sanborn County, South Dakota, to Clyde Scott and Edith Wise. He attended Artesian Grade School and graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1955. He served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1959. Hubert married Connie Lou Schneider on 22 October 1960 at United Methodist Church in Madison. Hubert worked at the John Morrell Packing Plant in Madison until it closed. Then he moved his family to West Bend in 1970. After working at the West Bend Co. and Gehl Co., Hubert settled in at Barton Products Corporation as a screw machine operator, retiring in 1997. Later he bartended part-time at Moonlighting Lounge in West Bend where he enjoyed camaraderie and friendship. Hubert was an avid outdoorsman, hunting and fishing since he was a kid. He had a special fondness for birds and made it a priority to keep his feeders full.

He was preceded in death by his wife Connie in 1987 and by his parents, one brother, Stuart Scott; and one niece.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, 29 May in West Bend. The funeral service was held on Saturday, 01 May 2010, at Ellsworth Funeral Home located at 321 North Egan Road, Madison where the Reverend Gene Kroger officiated. Burial followed at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Artesian with full military honors.
