Harvey T. Fohl was mustered into Company B, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division on 29 Septembert 1942 at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois. After training in England, he landed in Normandy, France, on July 22, 1944. He died in action at Saint-Lô, France on 10 August 1944. He was twenty-three years old. His death occurred just nineteen days before Allied Forces liberated France.
He received the followng awards: Purple Heart, European Theater of Operations Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, and one Battle Star.
The American Legion Post 483 in Allentown is named in his honor.
Per Scott Noegel: Actually, he must have died at Gathemo, thirty-one miles south of Saint Lô, according to the placement of his regiment in The Army Almanac: A Book of Facts Concerning the Army of the United States, U.S. Government Printing Office (1950) and Didier Lodieu, “Dying for Saint –Lô”: Hedgerow Hell, July 1944. Alan McKay and Philippe Charbonnier, transl. (Paris: Histoire et Collections, 2007), which confirmed that the 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division did not participate in the first major Saint-Lô campaign.
